The Original Blue by Royal Delft

The Original Blue is the name for the hand painted ceramic décor from Royal Delft. These decorations are known as the Delft Blue and Polychrome styles and have been used in the Netherlands since the 17th century.

Delft Blue is the name for earthenware with a blue decoration on a white background. The designs are inspired by the Chinese porcelain from the Ming and Kang Hsi dynasties. Inevitably, the typical Dutch land and seascapes started to appear from the beginning of the 17th century.

Polychrome is a multi-coloured decoration technique using the colours yellow, green, blue and red. This decoration technique was originally used in Mediterranean countries.

Of these two styles, Delft Blue is by far the most famous.
